C/O POP AT THE KÖLNER PHILHARMONIE

c/o pop 2009 is taking over bastion after bastion of high culture in Cologne. The festival headquarters has moved to the Schauspielhaus theatre and Opernterrassen on Offenbachplatz, and now c/o pop is making its first appearance in the Philharmonic Hall. The traditional opening concert of the festival will take place there on Wednesday 12 August, when the polka pop God and his band BEIRUT come to town, followed two days later by The Notwist & Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra with more philharmonic c/o pop music.

Zach Condon aka Beirut recorded his first album ("The Joys of Losing Weight") aged just 15, under the name The Real People. Despite being a gifted student, he left his New Mexico high school at 16 to travel through Europe, where he hungrily absorbed Balkan influences and explored Sinti and Roma folk music. The direct result of this inspiring trip was the creation of the band Beirut, which has, at times, had up to eleven members. Their unique mixture of orchestral gypsy music, melodic pop and Eastern European polka has been well received by the music press and throughout the entire indie scene.

Their combination of chamber music, electro and pop is so popular that The Notwist concerts are invariably sold out. Their record "Neon Golden" once made the New York Times' "Best Albums of the Year" list and their latest offering, "The Devil, You & Me", has also received nothing but praise. The band is supported in the Philharmonic Hall by the Berlin-based Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, which reconciles classical music and jazz. Its repertoire consists almost entirely of pieces written especially for it by conductor Daniel Glatzel. The Orchestra's members come from all over the world and have won numerous prestigious awards.

The concerts by Beirut and The Notwist are being hosted jointly by KölnMusik and c/o pop and are not included in the festival ticket. Festival ticket holders pay half price. More information coming soon on our Ticket-Site!
